IKEA Pop-up store Nuremberg: Furniture giant returns to the Central Station

The new IKEA pop-up store in Nuremberg opens August 25 at the Central Station. Here’s what the mini-store offers, what it won’t do, and why IKEA returned.
As reported by nordbayern.de, IKEA is returning to a central location in Nuremberg with a temporary store. The IKEA pop-up store Nuremberg shoppers can visit next opens for the first time on Tuesday, August 25, in the western side wing of the main entrance hall at Nuremberg Central Station.
Until shortly before the opening, the same retail space was covered in the colorful branding of Holy, a Berlin-based soft-drink startup that had run a temporary store there since May 2026. After the store proved popular, its lease was extended through mid-August. Holy has now completely vacated the premises, and posters and opaque white curtains are announcing the successor.
Where the new IKEA pop-up store in Nuremberg is located
The location is the western side wing of the Central Station’s main entrance hall. IKEA’s previous pop-up store in Nuremberg, in the former Kaufhof building downtown, closed as planned in spring 2026; the company is now bringing its compact retail concept directly to one of the city’s main transport hubs.
How long the new store will remain there is currently unclear.
What the store offers
The temporary store will offer a selection of popular products, home-furnishing inspiration, and Swedish food available for immediate purchase.
There is also a planning service, including help designing customized furniture such as a PAX wardrobe, which customers can use at the mini-store. Larger pieces of furniture can be ordered on site, and Click & Collect pickup options will be available.
What the store won’t do
There are some limitations worth knowing before visiting the IKEA pop-up store Nuremberg is about to gain:
- No returns or complaints. The location will not accept either.
- No gift cards or store credit. Neither can be used here.
- No Swedish restaurant or bistro.
- Card payment only. Cash will not be accepted.
IKEA and Nuremberg: a long and complicated history
IKEA and the Nuremberg–Fürth area have a long history together. The IKEA store at Hans-Vogel-Straße 110 in Fürth opened in 1981. Before that, IKEA had already established a so-called “start boutique” on Marienstraße in Nuremberg in 1979; that location closed again in 1981.
In 2017, IKEA purchased a site of roughly 73,000 square meters at Regensburger Straße 420–422, near the Max-Morlock-Stadion. The plan was to build an €80 million furniture store with more than 25,000 square meters of retail space, originally scheduled to open in 2020.
Although the City of Nuremberg quickly approved the development plan and established the necessary building rights, nothing happened on the site for years.
Following a comprehensive review, IKEA announced in May 2026 that, under current conditions and changing shopping habits, the project was no longer economically viable. The plans were canceled.
What will ultimately happen to the undeveloped site in southern Nuremberg remains unclear. IKEA and the City of Nuremberg are in close discussions about finding an alternative use for the property.
