Cashless payments in Germany: One in three Germans ready

Cash has long been king in Germany, but recent trends indicate a significant shift towards cashless payments in Germany. According to recent research by YouGov for consulting company BearingPoint, nearly 33% of Germans are open to moving away from cash payments within the next decade.

Changing attitudes towards cashless payments in Germany

Despite digital payment methods gaining popularity, 69% of Germans still frequently use cash, reflecting a traditional preference similar to neighboring Austria, where 73% regularly use cash, according to Tagesspiegel. However, attitudes are changing, with a clear trend toward increased adoption of card and mobile payments becoming evident.

Europe’s shifting payment landscape

The survey conducted among 10,222 adults across nine European countries revealed widespread anticipation of reduced cash usage, with an average of 38% of respondents expecting a shift towards cashless payments in the next 10 years.

The Nordic countries lead this trend, with Finland at the forefront: 89% of Finns regularly use contactless payments, followed by Denmark (76%) and Sweden (75%). Correspondingly, cash usage is lower in these countries, standing at only 46% in Finland, 35% in Denmark, and 28% in Sweden. It shows that cashless payments in Germany need some time to popularize but the interest is definitely there.

The growing appeal of digital payment methods

Interest in cashless payments in Germany such as contactless card payments and mobile payment solutions (via smartphones and smartwatches) is increasing. Ireland, notably, exhibits the highest enthusiasm among the surveyed nations, with 40% of respondents eager to use card payments more frequently, and 39% open to adopting mobile payment solutions.
