PEOPLE FIRST
What first drew you to this industry?
STEFAN: What first drew me to this industry was its dynamic nature, global reach, and cultural diversity. No two days are ever the same, and you have the opportunity to work at the very heart of the global economy.
Which early failure taught you something that still guides you today?
STEFAN: People first. You can move mountains as a team, but alone you won’t move anything. So, make sure your team has everything they need to do their job, and provide them with trust, empowerment, and clear objectives.
Quote / Stefan Böhler, Managing Director at Spring GDS GermanyA happy customer is not only a great customer but also the best long-term investment you can make for your company and your people.
When you think of the past decade of e-commerce, what do you miss – and what are you glad we left behind?
STEFAN: Coming from a freight forwarding background, which shares many touchpoints with e-commerce, we’ve seen how supply chain disruptions have grown significantly in both frequency and magnitude over the past 5-6 years. What used to be an exception has now become routine.
Competition in e-commerce is intense, even as the sector continues to offer fantastic CAGR prospects. And since we often miss what we don’t have, a little bit of “normal” would be nice once in a while.
What is the single most important business lesson you have learned throughout your career?
STEFAN: Always listen to your customer’s perspective. Customers provide valuable insights into your company’s strengths and weaknesses. Make their perception a priority – it drives their behaviour and guides your focus areas. A happy customer is not only a great customer but also the best long-term investment you can make for your company and your people.
FOCUS AND INNOVATION KEEP YOU AHEAD
How would you define success in e-commerce today, and how has your view of it changed over time?
STEFAN: I define success in e-commerce as the result of many small, deliberate steps coming together to achieve clear objectives, supported by hard work, a bit of luck, and an unwavering focus on continuous innovation. Today, success is not just about growth; it’s about creating a seamless customer experience, building resilient supply chains, and staying agile in a rapidly changing market. Over time, my view has shifted from chasing scale alone to prioritizing adaptability, sustainability, and customer-centricity. In this industry, standing still is not an option – focus and innovation are what keep you ahead.
What do you see as the biggest opportunity in e-commerce today?
STEFAN: The biggest opportunity in e-commerce today lies in creating truly seamless, customer-centric experiences powered by technology and data. Personalization at scale, combined with predictive analytics and AI-driven automation, can transform how businesses engage with customers. Beyond that, sustainability is becoming a critical differentiator – companies that integrate green logistics and transparent supply chains will win trust and loyalty. Finally, cross-border e-commerce remains a huge growth area, as global consumers demand faster, more reliable delivery and localized experiences. Those who can combine focus, innovation, and agility will lead the next wave of growth.
What’s the most counterintuitive or unconventional thing your company does today that actually works?
STEFAN: One unconventional approach that works for us is prioritizing simplicity over complexity in a highly tech-driven environment. While many companies chase elaborate systems and processes, we focus on streamlining and removing friction – both for customers and internally. This means fewer layers, faster decisions, and empowering teams to act quickly. It sounds counterintuitive in an industry obsessed with automation and scale, but simplicity drives agility, improves customer experience, and keeps us competitive.
What guiding principle do you personally refuse to compromise on, no matter the trend or pressure?
STEFAN: Integrity means acting in alignment with your values and principles, even when it’s uncomfortable. And building trust in yourself and others.
COURAGE TO EXPLORE NEW PATHS
Looking ahead, what will define the next decade of e-commerce, and how does thinking about the future make you feel – optimistic, excited, concerned, or something else?
STEFAN: The next decade of e-commerce will be defined by full visibility and control across the entire supply chain, from the point of origin to the customer’s doorstep. Merchants will demand resilient supply chains that combine simplicity with flexibility and reliability. The real game-changer will be integrated solutions: a true one-stop shop for smaller merchants, offering purchase order management, transport management, fulfilment services, and delivery management worldwide from a single source. This level of transparency and control will not only reduce complexity but also empower merchants to scale globally with confidence.
I am an optimist, so being at the pulse of global trade is both exciting and fascinating. I look forward to the years ahead in this dynamic environment.
If you could leave a message for future e-commerce leaders, what would it be?
STEFAN: Be bold. Be brave. Have the courage to explore new paths and challenge the status quo. Accept failure as part of the journey and learn from it; every setback is an opportunity to grow. Innovation in e-commerce comes from those willing to take risks and think differently, so don’t be afraid to lead the way.
